Ingredients

Scale
  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2¼ tsp)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 24 tbsp milk (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, combine warm milk, melted butter, egg, food coloring, and vanilla extract. Stir this into the dry ingredients and gradually add remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  3. Prepare the filling by mixing softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  4. Roll out dough into a rectangle. Spread filling evenly on top and roll tightly into a log. Slice into 12 equal pieces.
  5. Place in a greased baking dish and let rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  6. For the frosting: Beat softened cream cheese with unsalted butter until smooth; gradually add powdered sugar along with vanilla extract and milk until desired consistency is achieved.
  7. Once rolls are slightly cooled, spread frosting generously over each roll before serving.
